Mrs. Burch's Weekly Update (4/13)

Good morning! I hope your family had a wonderful weekend! 😁

Beginning this week, we are going to restructure our learning time a little bit. Your child will be assigned four lesson activities each week (two Math and two ELA). This week, the assigned activities will come from the choice boards we sent out last week.  If you have completed these activities, feel free to pick a different choice from the board that you like! There are many options on the choice boards. I selected four that most of you have not already reported to me on Seesaw.

Starting April 20, those lessons will look a little different.  In 2nd grade, we have been careful to take the time to pick one theme for the week and create two lesson activities that reinforce that theme. We often teach and reteach to help students with mastery. Because of this, we will be creating videos for you of the lessons for the week (starting April 20), so that your child could watch it as many times as needed as they work on their two activities. We will put both lesson activities at the end of the slideshow, to keep the lesson activities in one place for your reference. Please plan to do one Math activity on Monday and Tuesday and one ELA activity on Thursday and Friday.  Of course, we know every family situation is different, so please make this work for your family schedule and reach out with questions.

Your child will respond in Seesaw and will be given credit for their work (B-Beginning, D-Developing, S-Secure, NE-Not Evident).  Please make sure students log into the class app and post in their Seesaw journal, like we do at school (not via parents on the family app).  They know how to do this!

By Friday your child should have completed all four lesson activities. We will be reviewing their work and giving them credit for their efforts. Please reach out with any questions you have! I'm here to help!! :)

Here are the math and ELA lessons for this week:

The math theme for this week is Telling Time & Temperatures.  Please complete these two activities to review telling time.

  • Activity 1: Practice telling time. Tell a family member the time during parts of your day. For example: I woke up at 7:45 a.m. We are eating lunch and it is 12:05 p.m. Pay attention to AM and PM when you are telling time.  In Seesaw, find the "What time is it?" activity your teacher shared with you. Show the time for four things you do during the day. Record your responses and submit when finished.

  • Activity 2: Take the temperature in the morning, middle of the day, and evening.  (You may also check the temperature on a weather app or the computer.) Make a bar graph to show the different temperatures. Take a picture of your bar graph and explain it to your teacher on Seesaw.

The ELA theme for this week is Descriptive Words.  Below are two great Descriptive Words activities for you to complete this week.

  • Activity 1: Go on a scavenger hunt around your house or on a Spring Scavenger Hunt nature walk with your family. Pay attention to the world around you!  What do you see, hear, smell? Post a picture (a drawing is great!) of your most interesting find on Seesaw and record why you found it so interesting. Use descriptive words in your explanation!  Write at least three sentences with correct capitals and punctuation!

Here is a link to a Spring Scavenger Hunt you can use:

  • Activity 2: Create a sculpture with Play-Doh (or other materials of your choice) and write a descriptive piece about your creation.  Describe at least three of your sculptures attributes. Using interesting adjectives. Post your sculpture on Seesaw and record your description.

Have fun with your learning!  I can't wait to see the fun things you do this week!

I am also looking forward to seeing you on Zoom on Tuesday at either 11am or 7pm.  Make sure to bring a book you've been reading to share with the class.
